To publish your site, the first thing you'll need to do is find a Web host. Hosting prices vary from about $5 per month for basic hosting to $50-$100 (or more) for dedicated e-commerce sites. Here are some things to consider as you choose your host:

Free Web hosting

There is a definite downside to the free hosting option:

  • Many free hosts require you to dedicate some of your page space to running their ads or
  • You won't be able to have your own domain name (URL)

Depending on your needs, free hosting may be a great option; however, make sure if you use a free host that you're not giving away too much.

Discount Web packages offer great hosting options for under $15 a month. Here's what you'll get with discount hosting:

Discount hosting is a great option for many personal and small business sites. Most discount hosts also offer packages for full-service, dedicated hosting.

Dedicated e-commerce hosting

If you're creating a personal Web site, or one for a small business, you probably won't need to consider this option. With a dedicated e-commerce package you'll get:

  • Unlimited storage capacity and bandwidth
  • Full support for virtually all e-commerce technologies
  • Your own dedicated server

Dedicated hosting options can range from $30-$100 or more. A considerable expense if you're just starting out!



Selecting your Web host

Here are some tips to help you select the best Web host for your Web site. A good Web host should provide:

  • Guaranteed up-time: If your site is down, you won't be making any sales or generating ad revenues.
  • 24/7 tech support: If you have a problem uploading to or accessing your site you want to make sure someone is there to help.
  • Hosting options: As your site grows, you may transition to a dedicated e-commerce site. You don't want to change hosts because you've outgrown your provider.
