Using color

Color can be one of the most effective ways to add pizzazz to your Web site, but it can also ruin a good site if used poorly.

Using color effectively

To effectively use color, you should:

  • Decide on a common color scheme and stick to it.
  • Pick a color scheme that matches the type of site you're creating. A florist may want a pastel scheme for their site, but a heavy metal rock band probably would not.
  • Remember that black text on a white background is easiest to read.

Select a pleasing color scheme for your Web site that is appropriate for the type of content. Keep your color selections simple, with one of the schemes explained on this page will help you build successful Web sites!

Color Schemes

Selecting a consistent color scheme that reflects the "look and feel" of your Web site will go along way toward giving your site that "polished" look. Here are a few of the options:

  • Monochrome: Uses varying shades of the same color for use in the site. While other colors may be used sparingly as accents, the site will be primarily designed with varying shades of one color.
  • Complementary: Colors are selected from opposite sides of the color wheel. For example, a designer utilizing a complementary scheme may select violet and yellow, or blue and orange as the main colors for the site.
  • Adjacent: Using this color scheme, the designer creates the site using two or three colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, in an adjacent color scheme, the designer may utilize blue-green, blue, and blue-violet to create the site.
