Defining alternate fonts
Whenever you create a font tag in html, you need to make sure you define alternate fonts as well. Whether you're defining your fonts within your pages, or using cascading style sheets, your visitors will not see the fonts you've defined unless they have them installed on their machine. Defining alternate fonts is a great way to ensure your visitor has a pleasant user experience no matter which font you're using.
Editing font lists
Whether you're editing fonts directly in your page (see example at right) or within a style sheet, when you click on the font drop-down menu, you'll see a list of defined fonts. Select Edit Font List from the menu.
Below is a look at some of the key points in the Edit Font List window. A few things to remember:
- Find a list of default fonts that ship with both Windows-based and Macintosh PCs. That will give you a good idea of what your visitors will have installed.
- List the fonts in order of 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc. Try out your site using only the 2nd or 3rd choices to make sure it maintains visual appeal.
- Always define either "serif" or "sans-serif" at the end of your font list. This will bring in the user's default font should they not have any of the fonts listed installed on their machine.
