AdSense color palettes

After you get accepted into AdSense, your next step is to decide what color palettes to use for your ads. Google provides quite a few preset options, but depending on the color scheme of your site, you may want to create your own custom colors.

Follow along below to find out how!

Color palettes overview

There are two schools of thought: you can either use colors that match your color scheme, or colors that contrast with you scheme. Contrasting colors will stand out more, but you may have better luck if your ads 'blend in' with the rest of your content. Your best bet is to use colors that match the scheme of your site. (For more on color, see our Using Color tutorial.)

Below is a step-by-step walk thru to help you create your own custom palettes.

Creating a custom palette

  • After you login to your AdSense account, select the AdSense Setup tab, and the Color Palettes tab.
  • Review the preset AdSense palettes, and if possible choose one that's similar to your scheme. This will save you the time of creating the whole thing from scratch. In the example below, we've selected the Seaside palette as our starting point
  • For this example, we'll change our title to the current color of the border, and change the border to match our background color.
  • Since we don't have any green in our fictional site, we also want to change the URL to a light gray.

Using AdSense color palettes effectively will help increase the success of your AdSense ads and your site!

  • Since we want the title to match the current border color, we can simply change the title to hex '336699' by typing directly into the box.
  • Next, change the border to white (hex FFFFFF) in the same manner.
  • Finally, click inside the green box (for the URL) and select a medium gray from the palette The sample palette and ad will now look like this:

  • Now that we've created our palette, the final step is to save it. Scroll down, give the palette a new name, and click Save Palette.

That's it! Now you're ready to create and place your ads...
